Holiday Decoration Project-Reversible Thanksgiving and Christmas Decoration

November 28th, 2012

I recently saw on Pinterest a link to an Etsy shop for a person who was making reversible holiday decoration signs. I saw that and wanted to create my own with a twist. I wanted my Christmas decoration to be able to hold our family's stockings.

What you'll need:
  • 2x4 piece of wood and a way to cut it (or have it cut for you at Home Depot or Lowe's)
  • Scrapbook Paper
  • Letters to spell the words (mine were made of vinyl cut on a Cricut, but paper letters would work just as well)
  • Mod Podge
  • Hooks(I used little 3/4 inch gold hooks)and a drill to make the holes for the hooks

What to do:
  • Cut the 2x4 into 7pieces (2--6inch tall blocks, 2--4 inch tall blocks, and 3--5 inch tall blocks)
  • Pick the side for your Christmas side and pre drill the holes for the hooks in as many of the blocks as you need. I found that skipping hooks on the 4 inch blocks was best to fit the letters on.
  • Mod Podge the scrapbook paper onto the wood after you have cut it to match the size of the block. Be sure to make note of where the hole for the hook is on the paper so you know where to push through.
  • Then you add the letters to spell out Give Thanks and Believe.
  • Then add the hooks to the Christmas Side and Enjoy!
Thinking ahead...you could do a similar project with Valentine's Day and St. Patrick's Day. I may do it in the future using the words Love and Luck. I will post it when I do.

Table Project

November 29th, 2012

Before:                                                                       After:

I took our old stand for our 55g fish tank and removed the shelf it had because it was just plain ply wood and because it had been a shelf for a fish tank so it was pretty banged up. My dad then cut two new pieces of pine and finished them off with routing the edges to create a beautiful new table to go under our cross wall. The stand originally came with our tank that we got off Craigslist for cheap!

Formula Can Project

December 3, 2012

For awhile now I have been saving the cans from my daughter's formula. I figured I would find something to do with them and after spending so much on them, I definitely wanted to find another use for them other than holding the formula. I saw on pinterest a project where the person had turned old tissue boxes into something similar and so I decided that I could clean and then cover the containers and turn them into another decoration for Christmas.

What you'll need:

  • Formula containers
  • Scrapbook papper
  • glue/tape
  • A pen

Pick out a word to use. I chose "Joy" for the Holiday season. I then cleaned and removed the label off the formula containers. I also washed them out. I then cut scrapbook paper and attached them to the containers. I chose to right the word on myself but you could also use stickers, cut paper, or vinyl to put the letters on. I plan to go back and do something around each middle section. I was considering attaching garland to cover the dark blue from the lids but for now I think it came out pretty well.

Future Idea for the formula cans:

Tea Light pathway using the cans as holders. I plan to clean out a bunch, poke holes in the sides using a nail and a hammer to puncture the can, and then place a battery operated tea light in the can to create a fun lighted path to our front door. I will post pictures when I complete that project but it probably won't be for awhile.

Salt Dough Ornaments
December 9th, 2012

This weekend I decided to try my hand at Salt Dough. I found it was super easy to throw together and easy to work with. There are a ton of recipes online but I found that what I ended up doing worked nicely.

What you'll need:
  • 1 cup Salt
  • 1.5 cups Water
  • 2 cups Flour
  • Cutting board
  • Wax Paper
  • Cookie Cutters

I found that it required a bit more water than most recipes so I added the half cup. All else fails you can add more flour if it become to watery.

Combine the ingredients until it becomes a dough and then spend some time kneading it on the cutting board. Be sure to put flour on the cutting board so it doesn't stick. I then used a cup with flour on it to roll it out since my rolling pin is still packed. Then use which ever shapes you want to make.
I then baked them at 200 degrees for about an hour and then left them on the counter to continue to harden. You can also just leave them on the counter for a couple days and they will dry. OR you can turn up the heat and cook them for less time.

I painted the above star with a Metallic Silver Paint and then an Extreme Glitter Paint. I had punched the hole to hang it by with a basting brush tip that had a small hole.

The three I'm focusing on below are going to be used for name tags on presents. I just used acrylic paints to paint on the details. My niece is in love with Minnie Mouse right now, her dad loves all things Ford, and I'm doing a whole coffee package for Kagun's grandfather for Christmas so I went with a coffee mug for him.

The heart below was braided and then shaped into a heart and I chose to use red, green, and silver to make it more Christmas-y.

I have more in the works that are waiting to be painted. I will post them when I finish.

TUTU
June 10th, 2013

What You'll need:
  • Ribbon or elastic to make a waist band ( I used ribbon, no sewing involved)
  • Tulle and lots of it. (I had three rolls of 25 yards each and used more of it. You can use as little as much as you want to make the right about of fluff for you)

Directions:

Decide how long you want the skirt to be. I was doing about 2-3 feet long piece of tulle. I would fold them in half and slide them under the ribbon. Then you take the two end pieces and tuck them through the loop part as seen below:

Then you pull it through and tighten until it forms a not on the ribbon and your tulle is secure:

You will continue doing this until you are happy with the size of the skirt. I have included a picture of the beginning stages of the tutu:

This was my finished tutu. I had used three different shades of pink and a pink and green ribbon. You really won't see the ribbon so just use what you have around the house.

Father's Day Project
June 16th, 2013

What You'll need:
  • 3 Frames-Mine were originally bought at Dollar Tree they are 5x7
  • Scrapbook Paper
  • Paint-I used silver for the hand print/footprint and Blue for the letters
  • Chipboard Letters-Mine were .99 cents each at Hobby Lobby

Directions: (I did this over a few days as I was getting the parts put together)
  1. Paint the Chipboard letters the color of your choice
  2. Take a picture of your child/children with the letters (I chose to have her sit next to the letters because her holding them just wasn't working right with the picture)
  3. Paint the hand/foot that you are going to make a print of and stamp it on the Scrapbook paper (I also added her name and the year to the pages)
  4. Print the picture (I just printed it on the printer, it may not be perfect but it's inexpensive)
  5. Superglue the chipboard letters to the frame
  6. Place the footprint/hand print and the picture behind each frame
  7. Display/Gift your Father's Day Project
The total cost for my project was 3 dollars but I already had the frames. However, if you have to buy the frames go to Dollar Tree and your total will only be 6 dollars.

Wreath
July 20th, 2013

Completed Wreath

I decided a while ago that I wanted to make a wreath after seeing so many cute ones on Pinterest. I then decided that it would be cute to make one for Charlie to hang on her door and we could hang it on the front door for her Birthday party (which I can't believe is 2 weeks away). I went to Joann's this weekend and got the materials and was able to put it together during nap time on Saturday.

What you'll need:
  • A Styrofoam wreath circle
  • Ribbon
  • Decorations (I used monkey buttons, a flower, butterflies (they were from the flower section as well) and ribbon to make a bow
  • Glue or Hot Glue (I used Tacky Glue)
  • Felt Letter if you plan to do an initial
Directions:
  1. Wrap the ribbon around the Styrofoam and glue the end
  2. Decide on the placement of your letter and glue it to the wreath
  3. I then glued a monkey to the middle of the flower and then attached the flower
  4. Glue your decorations as you want them
  5. I then made a bow out of ribbon and glued that on as well
  6. I let it dry over night to make sure everything was secure
  7. Attach a ribbon for hanging and display it proudly
I picked my decorations to go with Charlie's room. Her room has turned out to be flowers, butterflies, and monkeys. I also went with different shades of pink to match her room and her Pretty in Pink theme for her 1st Birthday party.

Tinkerbell Basket
September 2013

What you'll need:
  • Basket
  • Felt
  • Tulle
  • Ribbon
  • Hot Clue/Gun
  • Felt Flowers (pre-made is ideal)

Directions:
  1. Attach tulle around the basket. (I made little poofs of tulle and attached them individually in 5 colors to math her tutu)
  2. I then cut leaves out of tulle and clued those around.
  3. Next trim the edges with ribbon (mine is little green balls)
  4. Then just hot glue on the flowers.
  5. Enjoy

It was really that easy. It took maybe 45 minutes to put together.
