On August 1st, 2012 we signed the papers for our first home and on the 2nd we got our keys. However, we did not move in until three weeks later because I gave birth to Charlotte and she spent some time in the NICU. So things have just started progressin around our house when it comes to projects and unpacking.

The first big change other than paint..Changing the plants and the border to the planting area. My dad did all the work. He first removed the stone boarder which were like icebergs. The stones were as big as 200 pounds each and 3/4 of the way covered. He also removed the cannis. He then put fresh mulch in and created the new boarder out of bricks that were bought off of craigslist for a third of the price you would pay at Home Depot or Lowes. He then added the three Rosemary plants. They are currently still sitting in pots until we get past our winter months, then they will be planted so they can grow and fill in that space.
The after picture shows our Christmas lights up as well. You have got to love perfectly spaced, straight hanging Christmas lights!

What you'll need:
Paint in two colors for your squares
Duct tape or a third paint color, your choice, for the dotted lines
Vinyl wall letter if you choose to add a monogram
Painter's Tape
Small Paint roller (about 3 inches) or a Paint Brush
A Pencil
Something to trace your squares in the size of your choice. (I used a 12x12 self stick tile to trace my squares)
Instructions:
- I started by tracing my tile in a diamond pattern.
- I then outlined them with painters tape.
- Then I started with the grey paint and alternated with the red as I went down. (I used paint we already had at home so this project didn't cost much for me.)
- I then let those dry for a couple of hours before removing the painter's tape.
- I then used cut strips of black thin duct tape to create my dashed line. (it may not be perfect but it looks good enough for me) I started to use the same tile to help me create the dashed line pattern but got tired of trying to hold and cut and place it perfectly so I moved to just eyeballing it.)
- I then placed my vinyl letter that my mom cut for me on her cricut on the diamond of my choice and worked around it until I had finished.

My dad had the idea to build a cover for the fireplace to help with the safety of a mobile infant/toddler. We decided to make it a removable bench that would not only be safer for her, but it would also be functional and pretty. Along with my uncle and my mom, they build a three seat bench that sits over the base of the fireplace and camouflages the fireplace when we're not using it (which is most the time in Texas). Then in the winter, we can simply lift it off and move it to another room or the garage.
