A wonderful moment today sparked an interesting conversation with a coworker about those worthwhile moments in life. You know the ones, the moment that causes all the hassle, pain, and work to be worth doing for that special moment you get to have.
My moment came today from a student. She had really appreciated the help I had given her and had brought me a card and wonderful gift card from Starbucks. It really caught me by surprise and touched me greatly. This was the first time someone had ever done something like this for me as an Advisor. It really made all the prepping, dealing with students who don't care but expect you to, and the hassle of answer the same questions over and over again worth it. To have this one person appreciate the few things I had done for her, it really reminded me why I got into advising and why I love my job. I am blessed to be doing what I love! And it's nice to know that what I'm doing is helping someone.
This led to the conversation about how parenting is just like this. Those moments that you want to tear your hair out, run and hide, or go sit and cry and then your child wants one more hug or needs their mommy and that moment makes you forget about staying up all night and what ever that substance is on your pants. It's the worthwhile moments with your children that make all of the hard work worth it. And let's face it, it makes it so you forget the troubles and actually have more than one child.
My coworker said that this could be said for husbands as well. I agree. There are times in a relationship that you have to work hard to maintain or even barely hold on to but it's because of those moments that when the worthwhile one comes, you can really appreciate your spouse and that moment to the fullest.
Today, I am very thankful for the reminder to focus on those worthwhile moments and forget the troubles and I am very happy that the conversations I have with my students are meaning something to them because I know they mean something to me. I will always remember the first student who brought me a thank you card because I too owe them a thank you, a thank you for reminding me how lucky I am!
